Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada – 2025 Update

Upon successful completion of studies from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, international graduates have the opportunity to apply for an Open Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This permit allows graduates to work across Canada for a specified duration, gain valuable Canadian work experience, and eventually transition to Permanent Residency through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class, various Provincial Nominee Programs (like BC PNP), and other initiatives.

PGWP Canada Eligibility

Can You Be on Part-Time Status in Your Final Session?

Yes. If you maintained full-time status throughout the duration of your program, you are permitted to study on a part-time basis during your final academic session. You must, however, comply with all other eligibility criteria stipulated for obtaining a PGWP.

Steps to Apply for Your PGWP

Step 1 – Gather Required Documents

  • Your final college transcript
  • The official graduation letter from your institution
  • Photocopies of your immigration documents and passport pages

Step 2 – Complete the Application Forms

Accurately fill out all required forms. This includes forms such as IMM 5710 and IMM 5476, among others, as specified by IRCC.

Step 3 – Submit Your Application and Pay Fees

Log in to your IRCC account using a GC Key or a Sign-in Partner to upload your documents and forms. Be prepared to pay the applicable fee of CA$255, along with any additional fees related to biometrics, processing, and other required services.

Step 4 – Await Approval and Passport Request

After submitting your application, IRCC typically processes PGWP applications within 3 to 5 months. You are permitted to work while your application is being processed—as long as you have met all eligibility criteria. Once your application is approved, you will receive a passport request from the nearest Visa Application Centre.

PGWP Work Permit Validity

While the PGWP processing timeline is approximately 3 to 5 months, you can continue working if you meet the conditions set out by IRCC. Your work authority remains active until the permit expires or you file for/receive permanent residency.
